Explore the Salina Coast and Istrian hinterland over a thrilling week packed with adventure.
Day 1 Adventure begins
Your local host will meet you at the airport and take you to your accommodation. After settling in you’ll be acquainted with your week’s activities over a welcome drink, followed by the dinner at a local farm – your first taste of Mediterranean cuisine of Istria.
Day 2 Take in the views
Morning at leisure or morning run.
We will get our first sense of the area on a cycling afternoon along the Salt fields, following the famous old train route Parenzana towards Savudrija peninsula. We will enjoy the views of the Saline Coast and its jewel in the crown – Piran.
Day 3 Salt trading route
Today we will navigate the channels of centuries old Salt fields on stand up paddle boards. An experienced instructor will give us a quick introduction and off we go! Keep an eye out for birds while you are paddling the Canal Grande, where old maona boats would carry salt in the past. After arriving at the visitors centre a Nature Park ranger will guide us through this unique natural and cultural heritage site, which is an important Ramsar listed bird habitat. We will have the opportunity to see and learn about the traditional salt harvesting process that has remained relatively unchanged for the last 600 years.
After the tour we will enjoy a gourmet lunch in the Salt fields restaurant, Fioret before paddling back to the beach.
In the afternoon we will relax aboard the salt trading cruise to Piran, the picturesque medieval salt trading port. A guided tour will have us strolling through narrow stone paved streets from Tartini Square to the landmark St. George’s Church, built on top of the cliff, while learning about the city’s heritage through its stories.
The rest of the afternoon is for your leisure and we shall meet again for a fisherman’s feast at one of the squares where the locals meet.
Day 4 Cycling the Hinterland
The cycling trip will take us from the Salt fields journeying up stream through the green valley of Dragonja. Our first pit stop will be a traditional apery, where we will learn all about honey and enjoy a sweet morning tea. Feeling recharged we will climb past the Supot waterfall to Kostabona, a typical Istrian village on top of the hill. After exploring the tiny streets of the village we will continue along the ridge towards Nova Vas while taking in the panoramic views of Dragonja valley bellow us.
The House of Wine, Olive oil and Garlic will welcome us for lunch. After enjoying the Istrian delights and watching garlic being woven into plaits we will cycle onwards to Sveti Peter to see the ancient stone olive press. The descent back towards the Salt fields will amaze us with stunning views of the SalinaCoast.

An early start for this exciting adventure! We will travel to one of the number one European climbing sites, a high U-shaped wall above the idyllic village of Osp. An experienced climbing instructor will divide you into groups based on experience and difficulty level and the whole morning will be dedicated to climbing.
The climbing expedition will be followed by a hearty meal in nearby Hrastovlje, another lovely village at the base of the Karst cliffs. There will be some time to relax after lunch, before seeing the famous 15th century frescoes “The dance of the dead” in the Church of the Holy Trinity. Next we shall stroll through the Park of native plants and animals, where we will have the opportunity to see the once almost extinct Istrian cattle, Boskarin.
Day 7 Horseback adventure *
* this day can be organized as a cycling or hiking trip as well
We will start the day at the Medljan Tourist Farm and meet our travel companions for the day. Our ride will take us through the village of Korte to Kastelir, the Prehistoric – Neolithic Fort. Having a commanding position on top of the highest hill, it boasts a 360 degree view of the entire coast below, as well as the vast Savrini hills and southern Istria. Our next stop will be the Korenika–Moskon wine cellar to sample typical local wines.
We will then follow the ridge and ride among the olive groves to Krog, the former Benedictine monastery, where the monks began the tradition of “nature cure” – healing treatments with saline water and mud were performed here already in the 14th century.
While our horses will be taken care of at the local stable we will have a picnic lunch with a grand view over the Salt fields and Saline Bay.
After lunch we will descend into Drnica valley and ride among its fertile fields before the climb back to Medljan from the northern side. We will help our hosts groom the horses, followed by a traditional Istrian dinner and farewell party by the fire.
